Team Spin/Litzler Automation is Back

Team Spin is now Team Spin/Litzler Automation! And racers have been winning, and winning big. There's Jason Blodgett catching some big air on his way to winning a race at Vulture's Knob. And Laura Webb notched her first career win in Franklinton, Ohio in May 2013.

Check out Spin/Litzler Automation's Facebook Page for more information.

There's Jeff Kompa in third place at the first Amish Country Roubaix, and that's Jeff again, in fourth, and Derek Wilford in first in Hamburg, that's New York, nicht Deutchland!

Team Spin has taken on a new title sponsor--Litzler Automation. And the change is yeilding results already! At the cyclocross nationals, Jane Geisse finished 2nd in her race, and earned a ticket to the World Championships in Louisville. That's Jane to the right, racing at the Cyclocross World Championships in Louisville in Febraury. Oh, yeah, she was FIFTH IN WORLDS!

Kompa Takes Masters Win at Fort Classic

Last weekend saw the team send a contingent of racers over to PA to race the Fort Classic Road Race across a number of different categories. The result of the day however came in the combined 40+/50+ Masters race where Tom Keller earned a hard fought podium placing from a strong break, and Jeff Kompa took the field sprint and won the 50+ category, while Derek Wilford managed to hold on for 4th place despite acting as a lead-out man for Kompa.

Keller and Kompa attacked several times, before Keller established himself in the winning move, while Tom Humphrey and Derek Wilford wrangled the field in between attacks of their own to help soften the field for Keller, and then provided a strong lead-out for Kompa. By all accounts, an excellent team effort.

Aussie Repeats at Chippewa Creek - Sternen Podiums in West Michigan

Photo courtesy of Laura WebbA perennial spring classic on the local circuit, Chippewa Creek is a challenging four mile loop down in Brecksville that features one short, but steep climb that leads to the start/finish line. Despite being a short race these days (it used to contain more laps), the parcours make it tough. This year racers were blessed with ideal conditions in stark contrast to last years upper 40s and rain.

Rob Thompson and crew lined up in the relatively small 1/2/3 field with the hope of defending his 2011 win there. Jason Halloran, and Dave Steiner got into an early move, but were never allowed much real estate and ultimately came back. On lap three the winning break was established with Paul Martin (Panther), Jeff Pendlebury (Cleveland Clinic), Jake Lifson (GPOA) and Rob. They rolled away from the field and would ultimately fight it out on the last lap before sprinting to the line where Rob managed to come over the top of the others.

That wasn't all that happened over the weekend, either. Junior Johnny Sternen podiumed at the West Michigan Stage Race after winning the time trial! An excellent result for Johnny as he continues to improve and build his strength. Meanwhile, Matt Bockbrader spent the weekend honing his TT skills ahead of Paralympic Nationals taking second at the Eastern Ohio Time Trail Series in the Masters category.

Winning at RATL

It's only May but it seems like racing has been 'full gas' (said in a low tone with a Luxembourg accent) for a lot longer. It's been an eventful few weeks with the RATL and Covered Bridge Series concluding, and some of the local classics beginning. We've been around though, and getting on a few podiums while we're at it.

The 2012 RATL campaign went well with the team collecting several results of note. Tom Humphrey proved that he's more than just a grumpy team boss by winning the masters race at RATL #1 with a clean set of wheels (nice!), while Derek Wilford, Jane Geisse, Matt Bockbrader, and Nate Veselenak all got on the podium of their respective races throughout the four race series. Juniors continue to steal the show, though, as Jason Blodgett once again demonstrated his sprinting prowess by leaping out of the field to take the Cat4 race last weekend, and Mark Gori went punching well above his weight by getting into the 1/2/3 breakaway, and finishing in the money. Nice work.

On top of that, Blodgett has raced Westlake twice, and taken 2nd and 1st respectively. If not for teammate Johnny Hoffman winning the day Jason was second, he might be two for two. Johnny's Westlake win was impressive. He rode solo off the front most of the race, and had such a lead he had time to crash, gather himself, and still win alone. It might be time for these guys to test themselves in the A race.

Finally, Rob Thompson got a good result in Michigan two weekends ago; he was second at Cone Azalia against some solid competition.

Spring Racing

Photo courtesy of WAS Labs CyclingIt's not unusual to be dealing with cold, wind, and rain this time of year, but with the good weather we've had this spring, Team Spin has been putting it to good use and turning in some solid early season results.

New recruit Joe Holmes opened the teams podium account early on when he ventured out to the Tour of Knox County to test his legs. Turns out his winter had gone well, as he attacked and escaped with an on form Brian Batke and taking second after rolling the dice into a stiff headwind. Not a bad debut in the new colors!

The team's first win came a week later at the Gambier Road Race through Dave Steiner, while Derek Wilford iced the cake rounding out the podium with a 3rd place. Dave got away with Batke (who seems to be everywhere) and took the 2-up sprint.

Not to be out done, the juniors wanted to get in on the action, and they found some at the Mid-Ohio Grand Prix. Johnny Hoffman and Jason Blodgett lined up in the B race, against more than just juniors, and managed to go 1-2, after a strong lead-out from Matt Bockbrader.

Last weekend saw another couple of podium placings, with junior Mark Gori taking second in the B race at the Covered Bridge after a solid lead-out from Nate Veselenak (who held on for 4th), racing against Cat 3s! While Rob Thompson took 3rd in the A race on tired legs after racing Battenkill the day prior.

Not a bad start to the year considering it's still only April. Read through for some reports.

Southern Cross

Last weekend, Rob Thompson, Derek Wilford, and Nate Veselenak travelled to Dahlonega, GA to have a crack at some February racing. The dirt road parcours were legit, with over 6200 feet of climbing in 50 miles, and an extremely challenging cx style course to begin and end the gravel road loop.

Rob had a decent day in the saddle, making the small lead group after the cx course shook out the field. As the course climbed upwards he managed to stay with the leaders long enough to build a solid advantage over members of the second group on the road before coming unhitched about 2/3 the way up the climb. Riding his own tempo for much of the rest of the race, he managed to hold on to 10th in the open men, and 15th overall despite an unlucky flat tire.

Nate rode a solid race, and turned in a respectable time well under 4 hours, while Derek also rode well in the 40+ field finishing inside the top 25% even though he also flatted.

With Ohio racing just around the corner, everyone agreed the trip was worth it, and a lot of fun to boot. If you're considering a ridiculous race next February, or you just need an excuse to get out of town, Southern Cross is a good choice.

2011 Round Up

This may be a few weeks late, but with 2011 in the books, we figured it was worth a look back at what in many respects was a banner year for Team Spin.

As a whole, the team had over 10,000 miles of racing across more than 350 events, taking 70 wins in various disciplines and divisions, many of which were overall victories. Not only that, the team stood on a combined 102 podiums across the country throughout the year.

The juniors on the team saw a lot of success, winning several races and often finishing with multiple riders on the same podium. Not only that, Mark Gori earned individual success becoming the Ohio State Junior Time Trail Champion. They will be forces to be reckoned with in years to come as they continue to develop. Excellent work, gents.

Team Spin also houses three other State Champions in Brent Evans, Jane Geisse, and Derek Wilford. Jane continues to make her competitors rue the day they lined up against her by turning in an outstanding year, and becoming the champ of just about everything she enters. She is the Ohio State Road Race and Time Trial Champion in her division, as well as the Midwestern Regional Master's Champion in her age group for the TT, Crit, and Road Race. Brent repeated as Elite 45+ cyclocross champion, with Derek locking up the 50-54 age group title.

Matt Bockbrader showed himself to be one of the best in his field this year when he went to USA Cycling Paralympic Nationals and earned a podium position in the Road Race in his c4 division.

In all, a great year for the team. Sincere thanks go out to all of our sponsors for supporting us throughout 2011; without your support and enthusiasm for the sport none of this is possible.

In 2012 we are happy to announce a few additions to the team to bolster our Cat2 ranks. Erik Lesco (formally of Team Panther) is joining the squad, along with Ray Huang (formally of Carbon) and Joe Holmes (formally Death Row Velo). John Sternen is stepping up this year and joining the team as a junior racer, while Nate Veselenak and Jeff Kompa will be coming across from SnakeBite Racing. Welcome, guys!

2012 is going to be sweeeeet!

It's coming this weekend!

and just because there has been some confusion, we'd like to clarify the following:

  • we will be having 3 seperate starts (not 4), but all categories will be staggered and scored according to NEOCX rules
  • yes, the 1/2/3 women will be racing with the 1/2/3 men at 2pm, staggered start and only 40 minutes

Geisse and Halloran Show September Form

As road season winds down, and cyclocross comes to the forefront, many racers start to struggle after having actively raced since March. The nip in the air and allure of delicious beer becomes their undoing, and results start to drop off as motivation wanes. However, at least two racers are not suffering this fate.

Jane Geisse returned from USAC Masters Nationals in Bend, Oregon with top ten results in the TT and Road Race, and a podium in the Criterium! Congratulations Jane! That's a solid end to a solid year on the road.

Jason Halloran found some late season form and has been putting up some results of his own. Rolling up to the first CX race of the year he found the podium on the first try, taking 3rd behind Paul Martin and Steve Twining. Then, after being close countless times, broke through for a win at Westlake Worlds. Ominous signs for Cleveland cx racers!

Second at Milk and One Better at Westlake

Aussie Rob had a decent couple of days recently. In perhaps the wettest race, ever, he managed to take second at the Smith's Dairy Milk Race, grabbing every lap preem along the way. Then, after banging his head against the wall all year, finally won at Westlake against a quality field, including the man who beat him two days earlier in Orrville.

Read through for his accounts.

Bike Racing Comes To 'The Wood'

It has seemed like an obvious venue for many years now, but it had always been difficult to get permission to hold a bike race in Lakewood, despite the fact that 2-wheeled culture is alive and well amongst its residents. After several years of campaigning, Team Spin finally got its wish, and with the massive efforts of Brian Limkemann (and a small army of volunteers), the Lakewood Criterium was born.

Raced around the west end of the city, the 1-mile course included fast sweeping corners, a small uphill grade section, and the wide boulevard of a completely closed Detroit Avenue. Riders praised the circuit, and in return treated the sizable crowds to some really exciting racing.

Jason Blodgett opened things up by smashing the Cat 5/Junior race, winning with enough time to look around, zip up, and celebrate his victory. Very pro Jason, keep that going. Mark Gori and Johnny Hoffman rounded out the rest of the podium in the Junior race. Nice work, boys! Zak Dieringer fought for a podium spot, finishing 3rd in the Masters 35+ race, while the ever present Jane Geisse took 2nd in the women's race.

While the rest of the team were volunteering, Thom Dom, Aussie, Derek, Ehrlinger, and Steiner were given a pass to race the main event. Not wanting to squander the generosity of team management, Dave attacked on the first lap setting the tone for the next 60 minutes. Dave, Derek, and Aussie collectively tried no less than ten times to establish a break, with a couple looking promising for a moment, but ultimately were short lived. Having already raced the Masters race, Ehrlinger became a crowd favorite after being popped off the back of the 1/2/3 race and was compelled to fight as long as possible. Finally, Thom countered a move perfectly, attacking down the far gutter along Detroit. No one saw him until he had a solid gap, and when Ohio State TT Champion Matt Weeks bridged to him, it looked like it could be a winning move. As it was, the two pre-race favorites bridged cleanly to them with a few laps to go, dragging one other. Despite being out there for a long time, Thom threw down a solid sprint and grabbed 3rd.

Big thanks to everyone who helped out last weekend, and to everyone who lined to course to watch. Read through for a couple of reports, and see you next year!

Tour of the Valley Recap

If you race bicycles in NE Ohio, you're likely aware of Carbon Racing's Tour of the Valley, and probably participated yourself. If you're a non-racer, or new to the sport, TotV is a 3 day stage race that takes place in and around Ohio's Mahoning Valley. Comprising of a time trial, road race, and criterium, it's the only race of its kind locally, and one of the few cycling events in NE Ohio that draws top riders from out of state. Team Spin showed themselves present and correct across all categories, and despite some ups and downs, overall had a good showing.

Bockbrader Podiums at Paralympic Nationals

Riding in the winter with Matt Bockbrader, head to toe in winter gear, it's easy to forget that he's at a disadvantage; especially when he's one of the stronger guys on the ride. Eventually, spring hits and the tights go away, revealing the fact that Matt wears a prosthetic after losing his leg in a boating accident. Ask him about it and he shrugs his shoulders before getting on with the job at hand. Locally, he's a perennial contender in the Cat 4 ranks, and, always up to test himself, enjoys the unsanctioned races where he can throw down against some faster guys, too.

Recently, Matt got a rare chance to race on a level playing field against his contemporaries in the USACycling Paralympic Nationals Road Race, and showed when things are even, he's one of the best in the country. Read through for his report -

The Season is in Full Swing

The weather hasn't broken, and it still feels like cyclocross season, but Team Spin has been active and racing, and getting on a few podiums as well.

Derek Wilford took 3rd in his masters race at Races at the Lake #2, while Mark Gori grabbed 3rd in his Juniors race. Derek backed up his performance the following day at the always tough Cone Azalia race in Milan, Michigan again placing 3rd in the Masters race. Zak Dieringer was there too and earned a hard fought top 10 placing. Greg Brekke had a crack at the Vultures Knob XC race taking 2nd in his division, and Jason Halloran sprinted into a top 5 placing at the Covered Bridge race in Akron, Ohio.

This Time: It's Zak's Turn to Win

Considered by many to mark the beginning of the local racing calendar, Races at the Lake are back again for season 2011, and Team Spin were in the thick of it from the beginning. Dave Steiner made the decisive break in the 1/2/3 field and managed to hold on for a top 10 finish, while Zak Dieringer was out fooling around in a breakaway in the masters race; he took 3rd overall, and won his 35+ division.

Aussie's Right: Racing is Hard

There are a number of ways you can spend April as a bike racer. You can spend it logging decent miles because the weather kept you inside too often over the winter; you can do some of the local races to test your legs, or you can race an obscenity like the the Tour of the Battenkill. Team Spin sent a contingent of racers to New York spanning a range of categories, with Matt Bockbrader (CAT 4), Derek Wilford (Masters 50+), Rob Thompson / Zak Dieringer (CAT 3), and Jason Halloran / Dave Steiner (CAT 2).

Cross My Heart and Hope to Die Results are In!

Here are the results for Sunday's Cross My Heart and Hope to Die Cyclocross Spectacular. The racing was, as usual, fast. Well, fast considering the kind of muddy, slow conditions, the double trip up the hill, a new version of the Spiral of Death, and a water trap no one counted envisioned until the rain and snow fell the day before the race. Oh well, that's cross.

Cascade Cross!

On Sunday, October 24th, Spin/RR Donnelley racers lined up for the Cascade Park Cyclocross event put on by Snakebite Racing. It was a great race. The course had a big hill, long open sections, twists and turns, and plenty of barriers to keep racers honest.
